Honorary Degrees

An honorary degree is one of higher education’s most significant accolades. The University awards honorary degrees to distinguished individuals who have achieved pre-eminence in their field or profession, or who have made significant contributions to their country, the society or in international relations. They are conferred on individuals who have made important contributions to the University and with whom the University has a relationship. Honorees affirm and dignify the University’s own achievements and standing.

Honorary degrees are conferred honoris causa, “for the sake of honour”. Honorary degrees are awarded as: Doctor of Laws (honoris causa), Doctor of Science (honoris causa), Doctor of Letters (honoris causa), Doctor of Engineering (honoris causa) and Doctor of Education (honoris causa).

The conferment of honorary degrees is one way by which the University can enhance its profile and broaden its influence in Singapore and internationally, and contribute towards building up a network of research and other academic collaborations.   It brings with it goodwill and positive publicity for the University.

The 2 honorary degree recipients are:

Degree of Doctor of Education (honoris causa)
Professor Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education, Stanford University
School of Education

Degree of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa)
Dr Lee Seng Gee, Chairman of Lee Foundation
